HSU, UT-Tyler Advance To ASC Soccer Championship Game
Hardin-Simmons and Texas-Tyler advanced to the American Southwest Conference title game on Friday afternoon at the HSU Soccer Complex.
The Cowboys defeated Louisiana College 3-2 in overtime and Texas-Tyler tied Texas-Dallas 1-1 and advanced on penalty kicks (5-3).
Hardin-Simmons 3, Louisiana College 2 (OT)
Kevin McNeal scored for the Cowboys 4:55 into overtime when there was a scramble in the box after a thrown in. It was his sixth goal of the season and sent HSU to the ASC Championship game for the ninth time in league history. The Cowboys will be looking for ASC title number eight.
HSU took an early lead when Dillon Parkhill headed a ball into the box and Colyn Moore finished it for his eight goal of the season in the 16th minute.
The Cowboys started a wild scoring flurry in the second half when Dustin Beal scored off a Kevin McNeal corner kick and made it 2-0 at the 59:16 mark.
Louisiana College answered with a Phillip Borde goal just 24 seconds later and the Wildcats received the equalizer on a long attempted cross that the wind pushed into the goal by Fellipe Albuquerque.
The game stayed scoreless the rest of the way until McNeal’s dramatics.
LC, the only team to score on HSU in the regular ASC season, finished its season with a record of 10-9-1.
HSU outshot LC 24-11 overall and 10-7 on target. The Cowboys also had 13 corner kicks in the game to just two for LC.
The Cowboys are 10-3-5 on the season and have a 15-match unbeaten streak.
Texas-Tyler 1, Texas-Dallas 1 (UTT 5-3 on PKs)
After playing to a 1-1 draw over 110 minutes, Texas-Tyler advanced in the tournament with a 5-3 win in a penalty kick shootout. The game is officially recorded as a tie.
UTT’s Alonso Rivera scored a goal in the 52nd minute when he followed an Elijah Simpson rebound off the goalkeeper. The game stayed that way until the 82:01 mark when UTD’s J.T. Hawkins scored from inside the box.
UTD outshot UTT 19-13 overall and 8-7 on-goal in the game.
Lance Quini had six saves and Steven Nicknash six for UT-Tyler.
In the shootout for UTT David Lopez-Molinar, Taylor Nelson-Cook, Austin Fletcher, Enoch Simpson and Parker Hood converted. Bryan Shiba, Jordan Rubel and Travis White converted for UTD and Michael Darrow’s shot hit off the post.
UTT is now 10-2-5 on the year and UTD finishes the season 12-1-6 and hopes for an at-large bid from the NCAA.
HSU and UT-Tyler will play for the ASC title at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the HSU Soccer Complex. HSU won the regular season meeting 1-0 in Tyler on Oct. 18.
