PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Derrick Jefferson, Jr., G/F, Hardin-Simmons
Guard/forward Derrick Jefferson (Mesquite, Texas/Mesquite HS) continued his all-around stellar play by averaging 18.7 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game as the Cowboys went 3-0 last week, including an upset win at league-leader No. 24 Texas-Dallas. In the win over UTD, Jefferson scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half erasing an 11-point halftime deficit. He knocked down 20-of-50 (.400) from the perimeter last week to help extend the Cowboy's win streak to six games and into a second-place tie in the conference standings.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES
Concordia Texas junior guard Josh Sanchez led the Tornados to a 2-0 record last week with an average of 27.5 points 5.5 rebounds and two steals per game. He shot 51.4 percent (19-of-37) from the field, including 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from beyond the arc. Sanchez also hit 11-of-15 attempts from the charity stripe.
East Texas Baptist freshman guard Dylan Augustine scored a career-high 22 points in the Tiger's win against Ozarks. He was 6-of-10 from three-point range for the second-best single-game mark in the ASC this year and his 22 points are the most scored by an ETBU player this season. When Ozarks pulled within two points (21-19) with 7:17 left in first half, Augustine sparked an ETBU 13-2 run with nine points on three treys in just over two minutes. He was 8-of-13 overall against Ozarks (.615).
Howard Payne junior guard Brandon Gould led the Jackets averaging 21.5 points per game. He was 10-of-11 from the free-throw line and dished out nine assists.
LeTourneau senior forward Justin Jones had back-to-back doubles as the YellowJackets posted a 1-1 record last week. Jones had 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Ozarks. He also handed out three assists and blocked a shot. Jones followed that up with 20 points and 15 rebounds in the win over Texas-Tyler. The 15 rebounds are a season-high and one shy of his career-high of 16 boards that came against Paul Quinn on November 26, 2012. Jones continued to be unselfish in his play with two more assists and he also contributed a steal.
Louisiana College sophomore guard Kevin Lewis scored a career-high 29 points in the Wildcat's 83-80 loss to Concordia Texas on Saturday. Lewis was 12-of-20 from the perimeter, including 5-of-9 from behind the three-point line.
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior guard James Allen led the Cru in scoring in both of their victories last week. He topped 20 points in each win and averaged 21 points per game. James added nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals while shooting 44 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
Mississippi College senior forward Lakin Ford scored a career-high 26 points in a double-overtime loss (103-98), on Thursday night against Concordia Texas. Ford averaged 17 points and six rebounds, while blocking five shots on the weekend.
Ozarks junior guard Ricky Allen averaged 16 points and 6.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week for Ozarks.
Sul Ross State junior forward Percy Settle led the Lobos in scoring last week, averaging 14.5 points in two games. Settle made 14-of-27 shots from the field and averaged 7.5 rebounds per game. He scored 17 points against Texas-Dallas and grabbed 10 rebounds against Hardin-Simmons.
Texas-Dallas junior guard Nolan Harvey averaged 19 points, 4.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game as he led the Comets to a 2-1 week. He scored in double figures in all three contests last week and has reached double-digit scoring in five straight games and 10-of-11 outings. He was 12-of-16 from three-point range over the three games, hitting at least three treys in each contest. In Thursday's 97-80 win over Sul Ross State, Harvey was 6-of-7 from beyond the arc for a career-high 28 points while adding six assists, four rebounds and two steals against the Lobos. He opened the week with 18 points and five assists in UTD's loss to Hardin-Simmons. Harvey had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists in Saturday's 95-70 win over Howard Payne. Harvey is now shooting 50 percent from three-point range on the season, on pace to break the ASC mark of 47.8 percent, set by Texas-Tyler's Brandon Weasby in the 2004-05 season.
Texas-Tyler senior guard Travis Dykman moved into ninth-place on the Patriots' scoring list (606 pts) with his 23-point game against LeTourneau on Saturday. For the week, Dykman averaged 18 points per game.
