After 30 years as a student, coach and administrator at McMurry University, Ron Holmes retired Thursday..
Holmes was named McMurry University’s director of athletics in 2009. He oversaw the 19-sport intercollegiate athletic program that has built a reputation for one of the most successful programs in the nation.
He compiled a 347-185 record that is the highest winning percentage of any McMurry men’s basketball coach. He led McMurry to five conference championships and has at least a share in seven ASC West Division titles including the latest during the 2008-09 school year.
After completing his 20th season as men’s basketball coach in 2010 he retired from coaching and began a full-time role as athletics director.
In January of 2012, McMurry University honored Holmes by dedicating the Kimbrell Arena floor and recognizing his contributions to the University and his excellence as a coach. Holmes, a native of Van Horn, Texas, received a Bachelor of Science degree from McMurry in 1977 where he also played four years of basketball under the direction of legendary McMurry basketball coach and NAIA Hall of Fame member Hershel Kimbrell.
Holmes remains active in the Abilene community. He and his wife, Leta, have two daughters; Linsey and Rachael, both graduates of McMurry.
The University will begin searching for a new athletic director immediately.
