On day two of Media Days for the new look Big 12 we are talking revamped recruiting with former Brownwood head coach Bob Shipley now on Back Brown's staff and a reshaped defense without former Early Longhorn and now NFL safety Kenny Vaccaro.
"Bob has such a great reputation in the state," 16 year UT head coach Mack Brown said of Shipley, "he's had a son play for us, Jordan who is very successful and is now with the Jaguars and another son with us now. We thought it would be very easy for him to tell parents 'I trust this staff, I trust this university. I gave this university my two sons and it's worked for me and it would work for you.' At the same time he's a great evaluator so he is also evaluating high school prospects for us."
The subject of defense was much talked about at Media Days for every team in the conference. The Texas defense had a bad stretch during last year that ultimately left the team with just 9 wins. The lone bright spots were the two Texas ball-hawks who left for the NFL in the 2013 draft.
"We lost two really good players who will be in the NFL this year," Brown explained, "first round draft pick Kenny Vaccaro and Alex Okafor who was a really good player, both were team leaders for us on defense. You've got to replace the two team leaders but we've got more older guys back than we've had."
Down the road at Baylor Lache Seastrunk is confident coming into the season. He is the preseason offensive player of the year for an amazing second half of last year at running back.
"When you have a really good line there's nothing you can say, it's not about you," Seastrunk told KTXS on Tuesday, "If I didn't have that line I wouldn't even be here. I would probably be at home watching the Big 12 on ESPN."
"We know "ache, he's a great team mate," Baylor head coach Art Briles said of his preseason standout, "he's a caring and passionate person for everyone on our football team. He prepares better than anyone in the United States of America and he believes in himself and I learned a long time ago that if you don't believe in yourself nobody else will. He's a great team mate and he will help us win ball games, he'll fight hard to do it."
