McMurry University freshman quarterback Gabe Rodriguez has been named as the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) national “Player of the Week” for the period ending September 28.
In last week’s 53-27 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State University, Rodriguez – who was making his first-ever collegiate start – completed 26-of-37 passes for 428 yards. He was intercepted just once.
Rodriguez also tied the McMurry school single game record by throwing seven touchdown passes (joining Jake Mullin and Braxton Shaver).
The freshman from Amarillo, Texas, made his first elongated appearance two weeks ago in a loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville. At TAMUK, Rodriguez was 29-of-52 for 278 yards and four touchdowns. It was McM’s first aerial scores of the season.
In the past two weeks, Rodriguez has completed 55-of-89 passes (61.8%) and thrown for 701 yards and 11 touchdowns.
