So You’re Telling Me There’s a Chance

Tevin Mitchell has an outside shot at becoming the single-season rushing leader in HSU non-scholarship history. He has 1367 yards, which is currently the fourth best season. He needs 252 yards to break Tommy Cupil’s record that has stood since 1994. He has 17 touchdowns and with two more would have the second-best TD season in school history. Quinton Jones, Tommy Cupil and Steven Rockwell each scored 18 TDs in a season. Mitchell went over the 2,000 mark for his career last week with 197 yards. He has 2,030 yards which ranks seventh in school history and he has only played 15 games. His 26 career touchdowns rank fourth. He leads the league in rushing at 151.9 yards per contest. He ranks fifth in the nation in rushing and is eighth in rushing touchdowns. He also ranks 20th in all-purpose yards.

Taking It To The House

Jessie Ramos took back his fifth career kickoff for a touchdown last week, a 95-yarder. He tied the ASC record and set the school record for career KO return touchdowns. Ramos is tied with Nathan Slaughter of West Texas A&M and Adrian Wilkins of N.C. Central with the three TDs at all NCAA levels. He moved past Zavious Robbins last week to second all-time on the HSU KO return yardage charts. He has 1,420 yards and is 327 yards away from Devin Carver’s school record. His 28.98 yards per return average is the highest in school history.

Knocking It Loose

Senior strong safety Jonathan Petty set the school record for fumbles forced last week when he recorded his ninth forced fumble. He surpassed the record of Jacob Freeman. Petty has had a standout career and suffered a knee injury against Sul Ross State. That did not stop him from making his 29th straight start last week. He has 192 career tackles which ranks 15th on the career charts. He ranks 12th 28.5 career tackles for loss.

100 Tackles

Jonathan Wilder recorded his 102nd tackle last week to push him over the 100-tackle mark. He is only the second Cowboy (Matt Warnasch in 2008 with 112) to record 100 tackles in a season since Jared Sanderson did it in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Wilder’s 102 tackles rank ninth in a season in HSU history. He will have to sit the first half on Saturday after receiving a targeting ejection in the second half last week. He ranks ninth with 220 career tackles for the Cowboys.

Senior kicker Mike Hursh has turned into Mr. Reliable on placekicking duties. He has made 51 straight extra points and he has made 5-of-6 field goals on the year. He had the second-best kicker scoring game in school history last week with 15 points on nine PATs and two field goals.

Punting Standard

Brandon Abbott has had a solid four-year career at punter and he holds the career record for yards per punt with a 40-yard average. He has 136 career punt attempts. He also set the single-season record last year at 42.4 yards per kick.
