Ouedraogo Qualifies For NCAAs In Triple Jump; Freshman Wins 55m At Masked Rider Open

LUBBOCK, Texas - Four-time all-America Amanda Ouedraogo will be heading back to the NCAA Indoor Championships this winter to defend her triple jump title after winning her marquee event Saturday at Texas Tech's Masked Rider Open. The two-day weekend event drew close to 1,000 student-athletes representing 27 schools.

Ouedraogo, a senior and native of Hauts de Seine, France recorded a distance of 41 feet-0.25 inches (12.50 meters) against a field of 22 competitors to comprise an ACU winner's circle that also included Elea Diarra (400m), Johnathan Farquarshon (55m), Baptiste Kerjean (weight throw) and Chloe Susset (1000m).

Ouedraogo's triple jump is the second best in NCAA D-II this season to Kearah Danville's leap of 41-11.25 (12.78m). Danville, a junior at Angelo Sate, competed last season for New Mexico Highlands and defeated Ouedraogo for the 2012 outdoor triple jump title.

Elsewhere in the field events, Kerjean won his second consecutive weight throw competition in Lubbock with a personal best and NCAA provisional toss of 58-1 (17.70m) that ranks fifth all-time at ACU and 14th this season in D-II. His throw from last week traveled 56-4 (17.17m).

Junior transfer Andrew Hudson settled for runner-up status in the weight throw behind a season and personal-best measurement of 55-1 (16.80m), which is a foot short of the NCAA provisional standard. Hudson - a former football player at Oklahoma State - had no prior experience throwing the 35-pound weight prior to this season, but was a 2012 regional qualifier for the Cowboys in the discus.

ACU newcomers also made an impact on the track - a group led this weekend by 2012 Olympians Diarra and Thomas in addition to Farquharson, a freshman from the Bahamas who attended Orlando Christian Preparatory.
Farquharson recorded the fasted preliminary time of 6.33 seconds in the 55-meter dash and then lowered it to 6.30 to win a very exciting race over freshman David Winters of Barton County by .003 seconds. Farquharson's mark is currently the sixth fastest among D-II athletes and places him just outside the school's all-time top-10 performers. Larry Jones and Ralph Roberts are tied for 10th place among ACU's leaders in the 55m at 6.29.
Diarra chased down several runners over the final 100 meters to win the 400m in 55.73 seconds and later ran anchor for the 4x400-meter relay, which finished fourth overall with a time of 3:49.09. Both of Diarra's times were NCAA provisional marks and rank among the top-10 performances in D-II this season. The relay also included Shennae Steele, Thomas and Ayesha Rumble.

Competing individually, Steele and Thomas made the final round of 16 in the 55, which was no easy task when going up against 70 additional runners. Thomas finished her finals race in 7.07 to rank seventh in the nation, while Steele ran faster during prelims with a 23rd-ranked mark of 7.18.

In the hurdles, Lexus Williams finished sixth overall in the finals of the 55m with a 24th-ranked time of 8.35 that was less than .2 seconds off her personal best. Freshman Jeremy Tatham also ran well in the 55 hurdles, but his time of 7.97 just missed the provisional standard by less than .2 seconds and 16-person finals by .03 seconds.

Additional highlights on the track for the men's team included Jordan Geary placing seventh overall in the fast section of the 400m (48.83) and freshman Xavier King finishing fourth in the 5K (15:42.78) and 13th in the 3K (8:58.81) on back-to-back nights.

Susset led ACU's women's distance runners, winning the 1000m with a personal record of 3:03.76 and posting a third-place time in the mile (5:08.10).

The Wildcats split their rosters next week as several athletes head to the Air Force Academy while the rest venture to Albuquerque for the New Mexico Invitational.
