This year’s NFL playoffs and Super Bowl are at risk of being played in inclement weather. This isn’t the first time weather has played a role in NFL games. Take a look back at some memorable games that had to be played in rough weather conditions.
Ice Bowl: The 1967 NFL championship game turned into the Ice Bowl when conditions turned frigid when Vince Lombardi and the Packers took on Tom Landry and the Cowboys. The temperature at Lambeau Field was -15 degrees as the Packers topped the Cowboys 21-17 to advance to the Super Bowl.
Tuck Rule Game: The 2001 AFC divisional playoff game between the Patriots and the Raiders endured a snowstorm and a controversial call. With heavy snow falling, Oakland led New England 13-10 when Patriots quarterback Tom Brady dropped the ball when he dropped back to pass. The fumble was overturned because of the Tuck Rule, allowing New England to retain possession. The Patriots went on to win 16-13 to advance to the AFC championship.
Fog Bowl: A 1988 divisional playoff game between the Eagles and the Bears was played in dense fog in Chicago. Visibility was limited to 15-20 yards throughout the game, which saw the Bears win 20-12.
Freezer Bowl: With a wind chill of -59 degrees and a temperature of -9 degrees, the Bengals topped the Chargers 27-7 in the 1981 AFC Championship game to advance to the Super Bowl.
Philly Blizzard: The 1948 NFL Championship game was played during a heavy snowstorm. The snow was so heavy the grounds crew needed help from the players from both the Chicago and Philadelphia teams to remove the tarp from the field. The Eagles won the game 7-0.
Snowplow Game: A heavy rain storm, followed by freezing temps and a game-time snowstorm resulted in very poor field conditions when the Patriots and Dolphins met on Dec. 12, 1982 in a regular-season game. Snow plows had to be used to clear away the snow from the yard markers. The game was scoreless late in the fourth quarter. New England asked for a spot to be cleared on the field by the snow plow for their placekicker. Although the Dolphins protested the move, the field goal was good and the Patriots won 3-0.
