The Pittsburgh Penguins signed defenseman Simon Despres to a two-year, $1.8 million contract on Sunday, according to NHL.com.
Despres, 22, had five assists in 22 games with the Penguins last season. He also had six goals and 16 assists in 36 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL. He led the team with a plus-19 rating.
Despres will get a chance for regular playing time after the Penguins lost veteran defensemen Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen in free agency.
