ABILENE, Texas -

Brownwood native and former MLB pitcher Jim Morris was in Abilene Thursday morning to speak at a benefit for the Baptist Child and Family Services' Transition Center and "Our House".

Morris, known as 'The Rookie' made famous by the Disney movie, made 16 appearences in the major leagues before retiring in his rookie year. Morris was a rookie at the age of 35.

He spoke to the men of Abilene about helping give kids a second chance, and who better to do so than Morris.

"I got a big second chance later in my life," said Morris. "I'm here to help them solidify a ground thing so we can help this kids and get them where they need to be with good people around them, mentors, and jobs, and college and start putting the dream picture in their head, and see further than they thought they could go."
