WOMEN'S COLLEGE HOOPS: Cowgirls Fall Late To LeTourneau
Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team lost a tough 55-53 American Southwest Conference game to LeTourneau on Saturday afternoon at the Solheim Center in Longview.
The Cowgirls led most of the game, despite shooting only 29 percent for the game. Shelby Hanna scored the first eight points of the game for HSU and the Cowgirls had an early 13-7 lead. They pushed it to 25-15 with 5:51 to play in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets responded with eight straight points and the Cowgirls eventually finished the first half with a 30-25 lead.
In the second half, the Cowgirls pushed the lead to 46-38 with 9:08 to play in the game on an Alicia Finn free throw. It was the last points the Cowgirls would score for the next 7:05 seconds. In that time, LeTourneau rolled off 13 straight points and took a 51-46 lead.
HSU scored four straight free throws to cut the deficit to 51-50 with 1:19 to play, but LeTourneau hit a pair of free throws and then after an HSU turnover Ashley Stephens hit a layup with :54 to play to make it 55-50.
Lauren Thomas then hit a 3-pointer with :46 to play to cut it to 55-53. It was the first HSU field goal since Thomas hit a layup with 9:58 to play.
HSU then forced a stop and had the ball with the chance to tie with :15 to play. Thomas’ dribble was deflected forcing the ball to Kayla Brown whose desperation shot at the buzzer was off the mark.
Hanna led the Cowgirls with 12 points and Thomas had 10. Ashley Stephens led LeTourneau with 12 points and Ashley Fajardo added 11.
The Cowgirls are now 5-7 overall and 5-4 in league play. LeTourneau improved to 5-7 overall and 3-6 in league play. HSU returns home to play Concordia on Thursday at 5:30.
