Wylie boys basketball coach Perkins leaving for Argyle asst. coaching job, pending board approval
Wylie boys basketball coach Russell Perkins is moving on after 14 years as head coach of the Bulldogs. He will take an assistant coaching job at Argyle High, pending school board approval.
Perkins confirmed the move to KTXS Tuesday afternoon. He said he broke the news to his team earlier in the day.
"It's been a very very tough decision, and my family and I have done a lot of talking and praying. We've sought a lot of advice, of kind of, what to go on," Perkins said.
Wylie capped off one of the best seasons in school history with a semifinal appearance in the 3A state tournament in Austin. Wylie also won the 4-3A district title, along with with area and regional championships, and finished the 2012-13 season with a 34-5 overall record.
"I've loved my time here at Wylie high school, it's a special place with special kids. I just felt like it was time for me to step back a little bit," Perkins said.
The move would take Perkins closer to his family.
When asked how the meeting went with his players, Perkins told KTXS it was tough to break that kind of news.
"When you spend as much time as we do together, you develop this love for kids... that doesn't change the longer you're here," he said. " There's not a kid on our team, if they started in kindergarten, I was here 14 years ago."
Considering the timing of this announcement, with Wylie fresh off an appearance in the 3A state tournament, there is no doubt in Perkins' mind that this team will compete at a high level next year.
They're already building on the pieces coming back to a district championship squad.
"We, by no means, have left the cupboard bare for anything that goes on. There's nine kids coming back from a team that went to Austin," Perkins said.
Perkins will likely join an Argyle program that lost in the area round of the 3A playoffs this season and won the state title in 2012.
There is no word yet on a replacement or timetable to find Perkins' replacement.
