More Expensive Weekend Travel

ABILENE -- If you're heading out of town this weekend, expect to pay more to fill up.  Prices at the gas pump rose an average 8 cents this week in Texas.  AAA Texas says the average retail cost per gallon statewide reached $1.80. The national average for a gallon rose 6 cents, to $1.90. San Antonio drivers paid the least, at $1.76 a gallon. El Pasoans paid the most, at $1.94. Association spokesman Dan Ronan says oil inventories continue to rise and crude supplies are running at a surplus of more than 50 million barrels.

Paying More to Light Up

ABILENE -- Texas smokers will have to pay more to light up.  The federal tax on a pack of cigarettes will go up 60 cents to about a dollar a pack to help cover more uninsured children in Texas. President Barack Obama signed legislation earlier this week that extends health coverage to 4 million more low-income children.  States have to find a way to help cover the cost and the increased cigarette tax is one way to pay for it.
