ABILENE, Texas -

Numerous showers and thunderstorms become more likely later this evening and on into Friday morning.

Early on our Thursday, we expect increasing clouds here in Abilene with temperatures in the mid and upper 70s. Scattered showers will be developing southwest of our viewing area this morning and begin to encroach first on our western counties.

As the afternoon wears on, scattered shower chances will increase across all of West Texas. Our best shot for locally heavy rainfall, however, will be later on this evening and into Friday morning as a cold front comes charging at us from the north. This front, along with passing upper level disturbances, and an abundant tropical moisture supply will allow widespread precipitation to break out overnight.

Highs on Thursday will be held down into the lower 80s. Lows Thursday night will drop into the mid to upper 60s.

Models indicate that the best chances for heavier rainfall will continue through the morning and early afternoon hours on Friday here in West Texas. The cold front will clear the area during the evening hours from north to south. We will be watching the exact timing of this as some football games could be impacted, though the heaviest rain should be over by then.

With clouds and rainfall in the forecast, highs on Friday look to be held in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. Behind the front our weekend ahead is shaping up to be dry and much cooler despite strong sunshine. Highs on Saturday will be in the lower to mid 80s and in the mid 80s on Sunday.

A gradual warmup is in store early next week with readings getting back into the upper 80s to near 90. Dry weather is expected into the midweek period.
