ABILENE, Texas - Spring-like weather stays locked in place through Thursday until our next weather system approaches in time for the weekend.
For today, look for mostly sunny skies with high temperatures reaching the upper 70s to lower 80s. Breezy south-southwest winds return with speeds ranging from 10 to 20 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph cannot be ruled out either.
Tonight, mostly clear to partly cloudy skies are forecast. Overnight lows will only cool to the lower 50s in most locations but a few mid to upper 40s are possible in low lying areas where wind speeds can slow down some.
Going into Thursday, we should start out with mostly sunny skies with partly sunny conditions building in by the afternoon. High temperatures should still be able to reach the 70s before a weak cold front begins working south of the Red River by the evening.
The forecast gets a little tricky on Friday as the cold front that arrives on Thursday evening stalls out over the Big Country. Temperatures will vary by 20 to 30 degrees ahead and behind the front. Current thinking is that the front stalls just to the north of I-20. This will keep Abilene on the warmer side of front. However, if the front pushes a little more to the south, it will be much cooler.
For now, we have temperatures topping out in the 50s on Friday and Saturday for Abilene. Don't take that number to heart as it could fluctuate either direction by 10 degrees depending on where the front finally hangs up.
Passing showers will be possible starting Thursday night and continue through Saturday with rain totals staying below a half of an inch with mostly cloudy skies.
At this time, the best rain chances look be to for Saturday night to Sunday morning as an upper level disturbance to the west begins to shift east over Texas.
Heavy rainfall, lightning, and even some gusty winds cannot be ruled out as thunderstorms push across West-Central Texas on Sunday.
Rainfall totals over the weekend look to range from one half inch to one and a half inches. Locally higher amounts near 2 inches cannot be ruled out.
Skies should begin to clear out by Sunday afternoon with high temperatures warming into the upper 50s and lower 60s.
Mostly sunny skies return Monday and continue through at least Tuesday with highs in the 50s.
