Anthony Domol: Tracking a wintry mix of light freezing rain, sleet and drizzle Friday
Winter weather advisories and freezing rain advisories are in effect this afternoon across all of West Central Texas. Freezing rain and sleet are expected to continue into the afternoon and evening hours of Friday.
A winter storm watch is also in effect for a good portion of West Central Texas for Saturday night into Sunday night. The potential exists for significant sleet and/or freezing rain amounts.
On this Friday morning, we are tracking much colder conditions across our region. The cold front came through Abilene just after 5pm on Thursday evening.
Temperatures will remain near or just below the freezing point through the daylight hours of Friday with a mixture of light freezing rain, light sleet, and freezing drizzle scattered across the area under cloudy skies. Northerly winds will be brisk at 15-25 gusting as high as 35mph. Wind chills are forecast to be as low as the middle teens.
Tonight cloudy skies will remain with the light scattered mix tapering off. Lows are headed for the upper 20s on early Saturday morning.
Saturday afternoon will continue cloudy with periods of drizzle and freezing drizzle a possibility. Highs will be in the lower to middle 30s.
Later Saturday night into Sunday we track an area of upper level low pressure approaching from the west. This weather system is forecast to spread a swath of precipitation into the Big Country. Current indications are that sleet is the most likely form of winter weather to fall over the Abilene area. Significant amounts of ice are a possibility. Highs on Sunday will be in the lower 30s.
Any precipitation will end by Monday afternoon leaving mostly cloudy skies and readings in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. Tranquil weather sets back in for Tuesday with highs getting into the middle 40s. Partly sunny skies are anticipated.
Wednesday we move into the middle 50s under sunny skies.
An early look at Thanksgiving shows plentiful sunshine with highs in the mid to upper 50s.
